Hobson family papers

Abstract

These papers were created by one branch of the Hobson family, early settlers in what is now known as Ventura County. Abram Lincoln Hobson (1861 – 1929) owned land throughout southern California and was an owner of Hobson Brothers Packing Company and Hobson City Markets. He was also actively involved in the local community. The documents include both business and personal correspondence and papers relating to his land holdings and business interests.

Edith Hobson Hoffman papers

Abstract

Edith Hobson Hoffman (1890-1970) is a member of the Hobson family, early settlers of Ventura County who played a pivotal role in its development. Edith was dedicated to preserving the history of the county throughout her life. These papers contain records detailing the publication of The Letters of José Señán, forty-eight letters incorporated into a book which detail life at the San Buenaventura Mission from 1796 to 1823.

John Larronde collection

This collection comprises surfing memorabilia from John Larronde. There are two boxes of surf publications which include books and magazines, as well as three photo albums and a scrapbook of news articles. The other two boxes contain loose news clippings, photographs, correspondence, and other surfing publications.

Abstract

The ledgers in this collection were donated to the museum over several years. Many belong to either the Superior Court of Ventura County or various offices and departments within the county's administration, as well as several private businesses or clubs. There are also a few still unidentified ledgers. The ledgers contain notes, financial accounts, or administrative records for a wide variety of agencies and businesses. Some ledgers may contain additional papers or correspondence.

Abstract The collection pertains to Achille Levy's personal and business life. Levy was a businessman, banker, and community leader in Ventura County. Born in 1853 in Mommenheim, France, he was 18 years old when he immigrated to California. McGuire family book collection

Abstract The McGuire family lived in the Upper Ojai Valley for much of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Nancy Darrah and William McGuire were married in 1875 in Ohio. William entered the milling business with Thomas Clark and bought 262 acres in the Upper Ojai. All eight of Nancy and William's children were raised on their ranch. Madeline Miedema papers

Abstract Madeline Miedema was an Oxnard historian and educator. Born in 1909 in Michigan, her family moved to Oxnard when she was 9 years old. She attended school in Oxnard and received post-secondary education at University of California Berkeley and the University of Southern California. She served in numerous community organizations and worked as a teacher, school librarian, vice-principal, and Board of Trustees member for the Oxnard school district.
