This account book records assets and liabilities for the Chaffee and Gilbert store. Walter Scott Chaffee, George S. Gilbert, and Charles Bonestel established the Chaffee, Gilbert and Bonestel Dry Goods Store in 1862. The store was one of the oldest department stores in California and was located on the corner of Palm and Main Streets. The store would later become the Ventura Department Store.
