Biographical / Historical

The Ventura County Star was founded in 1925 by the John P. Scripps Newspaper Group. In approximately 1936, the Star acquired the Ventura Free Press, which was founded in 1875, and began publishing as the Ventura County Star-Free Press in 1937. In 1994, the newspaper dropped the Free Press and began publishing again as the Ventura County Star and started publishing several local editions. Two of those local editions represented Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks and surrounding cities, such as Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Camarillo, Newbury Park, Moorpark, and Oak Park. Local edition names varied greatly during this time. Simi Valley’s newspaper was known as Simi Valley Enterprise from 1993-1994, Simi Valley Star and Enterprise from 1994-1995, and Simi Valley Star from 1995-2002. Thousand Oaks’s newspaper was known as Thousand Oaks News Chronicle from 1992-1994, Thousand Oaks Star and News Chronicle from 1994-1995, and Thousand Oaks Star from 1995-2002.

This collection consists of negatives dated from 1994-1995 that accompanied local interest news stories covering topics like politics, sports, businesses, schools, events, and people. Negatives in this collection are arranged in chronological order with notes attached that provide information on the type of news story being run and sometimes which edition it was to be run in.
