Letters and records, 1878 - 1886
Scope and Contents
This collection consists mainly of correspondence from Nehemiah Blackstock to Spencer Roane Thorpe from around 1883-1886. Correspondence is friendly in nature, but primarily covers business matters relating to real estate and care and management of agricultural land. Between 1883 and 1886, Thorpe primarily lived in San Francisco, California, purchasing hundreds of acres of land between Ventura and Saticoy. Thorpe moved to Ventura for approximately 3 years beginning in 1886. It appears from the letters that Blackstock was assisting Thorpe with land purchases and the management of Thorpe's land. The collection also includes financial and legal records from 1878-1886, including property tax bills and receipts and real estate records (mortgages, deeds, leases).
